Andreas Bauer Kanabas sings important roles in the serious bass repertoire. The wide range and legato culture of his voluminous voice is what makes him a basso cantante with great versatility. He studied singing with Prof. Eugen Rabine in Weimar and later with Paolo Barbacini in Italy, Robert Lloyd in London and Robert Gonnella in Toulouse. His repertoire includes Verdi roles such as Filippo II, Zaccaria, Fiesco, De Silva and Sparafucile, as well as lyrical Wagner roles such as King Marke, King Heinrich, Landgrave Hermann and Daland. He also sings Mephisto in Gounod's Faust, Escamillo/Carmen, the title role in Bluebeard's Castle, Vodnik/Rusalka, Gremin/Eugen Onegin, Ibn
Hakia and King René/Iolanta, Claggart/Billy Budd, as well as Sarastro, Osmin and Komtur with great success.
Andreas Bauer Kanabas has performed on international stages such as the Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera in Covent Garden London, Opéra Bastille de Paris, Bolshoi in Moscow, Teatro Real Madrid, Seattle Opera, New National Theatre in Tokyo, Teatro Municipal Santiago de Chile, Opéra de Lyon, the National Opera in Riga, the Semperoper Dresden and the Berlin State Opera. He has been a member of the Frankfurt Opera ensemble since 2013.
In recent seasons, he has made his debut as Philippe II/Don Carlo (in French) in Antwerp and Ghent, Padre Guardiano/La forza del destino at Oper Frankfurt, Escamillio/Carmen at the Bolshoi in Moscow, Alfonso D'Este/Lucrezia Borgia in Toulouse and Sarastro/The Magic Flute at the Royal Opera in Covent Garden London. Andreas Bauer Kanabas last sang the role of Sarastro at the Festival de Perelada, as well as in Paris, Berlin, Dresden, Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Malmö and most recently in the new production for the 22/23 season at his home opera house in Frankfurt under Steven Sloane and Ted Huffman. He has also appeared as Daland/Der fliegende Holländer at the Festival d'Opera de Québec and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and in Madrid alongside Sir Bryn Terfel. Another brilliant role is King Henry in Lohengrin, in which he has already made guest appearances at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Vienna State Opera and the New National Theatre in Tokyo. He was also heard at the Latvian National Opera in Riga as Duke De Silva/Ernani under the direction of Daniel Oren and was also extremely successful as Mephisto in Gounod's Faust in an award-winning production, which was also broadcast on Arte.
Concert engagements have taken him to La Scala in Milan with the Mozart Requiem, to the Gasteig in Munich with the Verdi Requiem, to the Philharmonie in Berlin with Schumann's Manfred under Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, to the Tonhalle Düsseldorf with Schumann's Faust Scenes and to the Verbier Festival with Haydn's Creation.
He was heard in impressive live performances of Elijah with the WDR Symphony Orchestra at the Cologne Philharmonie, followed by a concert version of Bártok's Bluebeard's Castle. He has sung Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in many important concert halls, including the Tokyo Suntory Hall, the Osaka Festival Hall, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Cologne Philharmonie. Under the direction of Marek Janowski, he sings the solo bass in a complete Pentatone recording of all Beethoven symphonies.
Andreas Bauer Kanabas has worked with many renowned conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Sebastian Weigle, Ivan Fischer, Ádám Fischer, Andris Nelsons, Philippe Jordan, Pier Giorgio Morandi, Ingo Metzmacher, Gustavo Dudamel and Christian Thielemann.
In 2020, Andreas Bauer Kanabas was heard at the Teatro Real Madrid as Vodnik/Rusalka before starting the 2021/22 season with many premieres and important role debuts: He appeared in the premiere and Arte live broadcast at the Semperoper Dresden as König/ Aida under Christian Thielemann, followed by his König Heinrich/ Lohengrin at the Leipzig Opera and his house debut as Rocco/ Fidelio at the Hamburg State Opera under Kent Nagano, he made guest appearances as Prince Gremin/ Yevgeny Onegin at the Komische Oper Berlin and again as Rocco/ Fidelio at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival under Jaap van Zweden. At his home theatre in Frankfurt, he was King René/ Iolanta, Tirésias/ Oedipus Rex, Escamillo/ Carmen, Oroveso/ Norma, Il Marchese di Calatrava and Padre Guardiano/ La Forza del Destino and Alcinoo/ L. Dallapiccolas' Ulisse.
Engagements in 22/23 include appearances as Don Ruy Gomez de Silva in Verdi's Ernani in Antwerp and Ghent, his role debut as Baron Ochs/ Der Rosenkavalier at the Irish National Opera in Dublin and his debut at the Spring Festival in Tokyo 2023 as Pogner/ Meistersinger. He stood in as Pogner at the Semperoper Dresden under Christian Thielemann and was also Veit Pogner in the new Meistersinger
production in Frankfurt, conducted by Sebastian Weigle and directed by Johannes Erath. Further highlights in Frankfurt were his appearance in the rediscovery of Rudi Stephans' Die ersten Menschen, directed by Tobias Kratzer, and the presentation of his latest Lied CD with Schubert's Schwanengesang.
The 23/24 season featured Andreas Bauer Kanabas again as Philipp II in the revival of Don Carlo in Frankfurt under the new GMD Thomas Guggeis as well as Ramfis in Aida, Sarastro/Zauberflöte and Landgraf Hermann/Tannhäuser and Orest/Elektra. At the Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse he was once again a guest as Prince Gremin/Eugen Onegin, as well as at the Dresden Semperoper as Geisterbote/Wrau ohne Schatten and in summer 24' he was heard for the first time at the most renowned Schubert festival, the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg-Hohenems, as part of a lieder recital.
Under Jaap van Zweden, he sang Daland in a concert performance of 'The Flying Dutchman' at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
During the current season, audiences at Oper Frankfurt can look forward to various engagements with the artist.
This season, Andreas Bauer Kanabas will once again take on the role of Ramfi in Verdi's Aida, this time under the direction of Julia Jones.
Under the direction of Thomas Guggeis, he will be heard as Banco in Macbeth, as Gurnemanz in Parsifal and finally as Boris in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, a role he will also perform at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein under Vitali Alekseenok.
Towards the end of the season, he will once again be part of the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg-Hohenems, this time alongside Ilker Arcayürek, Patrick Grahl, Konstantin Krimmel and Daniel Heide.
Numerous recordings document his career, including Eremit/Freischütz at the Semperoper Dresden under the direction of Christian Thielemann, the DVD was produced by Unitel Classica. In 2021, his critically acclaimed solo CD 'Love and Despair' was released by OehmsClassics, in 2022 Schubert's Schwanengesang with Daniel Heide on the CAvi-music label.
