Ekaterina Semenchuk is one of the most sought-after mezzo-sopranos of today, praised for her exceptional vocal range and unparalleled technique. Born in Minsk, she made her debut on the stage of the Mariinsky Theatre while studying at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St Petersburg. Ekaterina was a finalist in the Cardiff Singer of the World competition and has gone on to become one of the most highly regarded singers of her generation with appearances in the world’s major theatres.
Ekaterina's operatic repertoire includes her signature roles as Azucena/Il Trovatore, Eboli/Don Carlo, Amneris/Aida, Lady Macbeth/Macbeth and Princess of Bouillon/Adriana Lecouvreur. Besides Verdi, she is known for her interpretations of Didon/Les Troyens, Santuzza/Cavalleria Rusticana, Marina/Boris Godunov, Laura/La Gioconda, Lyubov/Mazeppa, Marfa/Khovanshchina, Dalila/Samson et Dalila, Giovanna Seymour/Anna Bolena, Preziosilla/La forza del destino, and the title role of Carmen.
Ekaterina has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra national de Paris, Teatro Real Madrid, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Salzburg Festival, New National Theatre Tokyo, San Francisco Opera, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Baden-Baden Festival, and Teatro alla Scala. In addition to his international career, he maintains a strong relationship with the Mariinsky Theatre and Maestro Gergiev.
Ekaterina is also an avid recitalist, regularly performing around the world with pianists Semion Skigin and Julius Drake at the Wigmore Hall in London, the Mariinsky Concert Hall, Luzern Festival, Das Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, Carnegie Hall, Moscow House of Music, Teatro Colón, and elsewhere.
Last season, Ekaterina returned to the Bayerische Staatsoper in La forza del destino and Macbeth, the ABAO Bilbao in Cavalleria Rusticana, at Teatro alla Scala for Macbeth, the Wiener Staatsoper in Anna Bolena, as well as concerts in the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, the Wigmore Hall in London, the Bozar Center for Fine Arts in Brussels, in addition to her recital at La Scala.
During this 2022/23 season, Ekaterina will perform in Luigi Dallapiccola’s Il prigioniero with the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Kirill Petrenko. She returns to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino for Il trovatore and Don Carlo. Other highlights inclure Hérodiade at the TCE in Paris and Lyon, Macbeth at Teatro alla Scala and Aida in Munich.
