The Shareholders’ Meeting of Bayreuth Festival GmbH has, on the recommendation of the Administrative Board, appointed Holger von Berg, currently Managing Director of the Residenztheater in Munich, as the new Managing Director of Bayreuth Festival GmbH starting April 2016.

Holger von Berg (49) is married with two children. He comes from Gelnhausen (Hesse) and completed his studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main with a degree in economics. His many years of work for theater and orchestra began at the concert hall “Alte Oper Frankfurt”. After positions at the Mecklenburg State Theater in Neustrelitz and the Regensburg Theater, his professional path led him in 2002 to the Bavarian State Theater in Munich as Managing Director. He will remain active there until he takes up his position in Bayreuth.

He will succeed Heinz-Dieter Sense as Managing Director and, together with Prof. Katharina Wagner, will manage Bayreuth Festival GmbH in the economic sector. In particular, the upcoming renovation and construction measures will be a focus of his responsibilities.

“Working for the Richard Wagner Festival is a great challenge that I gladly accept. In Bayreuth, I can combine my love for opera, and especially for Richard Wagner’s work, with a new professional challenge. Of course, saying goodbye to Munich, to Resi, and to many valued colleagues after 14 years is also associated with sad feelings. However, the warm welcome on the Green Hill has created expectations for beautiful and exciting years in Bayreuth”, says Holger von Berg.
