The Bayreuth Festival mourn Tankred Dorst, who passed away at the advanced age of 91. With him, German theater loses one of its most important and prolific playwrights. Wolfgang Wagner entrusted him with the staging of “Der Ring des Nibelungen” at the Bayreuth Festival in 2006 – an unusual challenge for the poet, which he, together with his wife and long-time closest collaborator Ursula Ehler, faced with courage and creativity.

Festival director Katharina Wagner is deeply saddened by the death of Tankred Dorst: “I held Tankred Dorst in high regard and always experienced him as a kind, passionate, and wise man of the theater, for whose life’s work I have great respect. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences go to his wife and relatives.”
