Bayreuth Festival Mourns Christa Ludwig!

Yesterday, Christa Ludwig, one of the most significant singers of the 20th century, passed away. Under conductors such as Otto Klemperer, Karl Böhm, Herbert von Karajan, and Leonard Bernstein, Christa Ludwig achieved global fame and decisively shaped the music scene for decades. Not only at the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals, but also at the Vienna State Opera, her home base, and at many important music festivals and the most renowned opera houses, Christa Ludwig performed various mezzo and soprano roles. She was also a brilliant lieder interpreter and successfully championed contemporary music. The honorary member of the Vienna State Opera received numerous accolades, including being an Austrian Kammersängerin and receiving the Opus Klassik award for her lifetime achievement in 2018. Numerous recordings document her extensive work; Christa Ludwig will remain unforgettable as an artist.
