Martin Hickmann is a stage, sound, and video artist. After training as a sculptor and sound technician, he studied stage and costume design as well as film and exhibition architecture at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where he later also taught.

His work has been and continues to be seen, among other venues, at Theater an der Wien (Ambleto, 2025; Denis & Katya, 2023; La Liberazione, 2022), Staatstheater Hannover (Die tote Stadt, 2026), Staatstheater Nürnberg (La Traviata, 2025), Staatstheater Mainz (Nabucco, 2022), Konzert und Theater St. Gallen (Tosca, 2025; Maria de Buenos Aires, 2022), Saarländisches Staatstheater (Soldier Songs, 2019), Musiktheater im Revier (Wozzeck, 2026), Theater Magdeburg (Fidelio, 2024; MadKing Blaubart, 2027), Theater Biel Solothurn, and Landestheater Innsbruck (Liebesgesang, 2024). Further works have been created at the Mozarteum Salzburg and the Schauspielhaus Salzburg.

He has designed exhibition spaces at the MuseumsQuartier Vienna, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and Mediamatic Amsterdam, and also works on production design and sound design for film.

Martin Hickmann plays bass and experimental electronics in obscure punk bands and, as a visual artist, explores the question of just how colorful the color black can be.
