Bayreuth Festival mourns Carl Hegemann, an incomparable man of the theater and visionary. Since 1979, Hegemann worked as a dramaturge at numerous theaters and opera houses, including the Burgtheater Vienna, the playhouses in Freiburg, Bochum, Cologne, Zurich, and Hamburg, the state operas in Berlin and Hamburg, and from 2004–2007 and 2011–2014 at the Bayreuth Festival. Carl Hegemann had a close collaboration with Christoph Schlingensief since 1997, who also engaged him as dramaturge for his highly acclaimed Parsifal production. For the Tannhäuser production directed by Sebastian Baumgarten, Carl Hegemann again served as dramaturge at the Bayreuth Festival. We commemorate a versatile artist who also shaped and inspired generations of students at universities in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Munich, Vienna, and Zurich.
