At the 2012 Bayreuth Festival, Christian Thielemann will take over the musical direction of the six planned performances of the opera “Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg” instead of Thomas Hengelbrock. Thielemann already conducted this work from 2002 to 2005 in Bayreuth. As planned, he also remains the conductor of this year’s new production “Der fliegende Holländer”, which will premiere on July 25.
Christian Thielemann is considered one of the most renowned Wagner conductors of our time and has served as musical advisor to the Festival since 2010, where he has already conducted over 100 performances (in addition to “Tannhäuser”, “Meistersinger von Nürnberg”, “Parsifal”, “Der Ring des Nibelungen”, as well as a performance of Beethoven’s IX Symphony). Starting with the 2012/2013 season, he will be chief conductor of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden. Regularly, the performances he conducts are celebrated as “moments of glory”.
The Festival management is pleased that with his conducting of “Tannhäuser”, the musical aspect of this production is placed in the best possible hands.
