Festival Orchestra

A specially assembled festival orchestra first came together at the instigation of Richard Wagner in 1876 for the first Bayreuth Festival. For the premiere of “Parsifal” in 1882, on the occasion of the second Bayreuth Festival, Bavarian King Ludwig II provided the orchestra and choir of the Munich Court Theatre. The Munich Court Opera Orchestra also played during the festivals in 1883 and 1884. Since 1886, a festival orchestra consisting of the best musicians from other ensembles has existed again. This has remained the case to this day: Around 200 musicians from renowned orchestras in Germany and abroad come together specifically for the Bayreuth Festival every year. Although the festival orchestra is re-engaged annually, there are numerous musicians who have participated in the festivals repeatedly for many years and consider them their second artistic home.
