Albert Dohmen

Albert Dohmen studied the oboe in Essen, subsequently studying to become a lawyer in Cologne while also taking private singing lessons. He joined the Opera Studio of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf/Duisburg in 1983, remaining with the company until 1985. The following season he joined the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden and now makes guest appearances in opera houses all over Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Zurich Opera and the Opéra Bastille. He has also appeared in Geneva and Edinburgh and at the Salzburg Festival. His repertory includes Wotan in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre, the Wanderer in Siegfried, the title roles in Der fliegende Holländer and Wozzeck, Don Pizarro in Fidelio, Caspar in Der Freischütz, Amfortas in Parsifal, Scaria in Tosca and Escamillo in Carmen. He made his Metropolitan Opera début during the 2003/4 season singing Jochanaan in Salome. Other appearances in recent seasons have included Scarpia and Bartók's Bluebeard at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, concert performances of Parsifal with the Munich Philharmonic under James Levine, Tristan und Isolde in Geneva, cycles of the complete Ring for the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam and Parsifal in Los Angeles. As a concert singer, Albert Dohmen has sung practically the whole of the bass repertory from Bach to Schoenberg, appearing in virtually every major concert hall and every international festival. Suffice it to mention Brahms's German Requiem at the Ravenna Festival in 1997, the Fauré Requiem under the direction of Georges Prêtre at the Vienna Musikverein in 2000, Elijah in Mendelssohn's oratorio at the 1998 Zurich Festival and vocal works by Frank Martin under the direction of Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Other appearances include Mendelssohn's Die erste Walpurgisnacht at La Scala, Milan, and the 1999 BBC Proms at London's Royal Albert Hall. Albert Dohmen has established himself as one of the leading Wotans of his generation and has appeared in complete cycles of the Ring in Trieste (1999 and 2000), Geneva (1999, 2000 and 2001), Catania (2000, 2001 and 2002), the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and the Vienna State Opera (2003) and the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam (2004 and 2005). In October 2000 he sang the role of Jochanaan at the Zurich Opera under the direction of Valery Gergiev, repeating the role under Hartmut Haenchen at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam and under Seiji Ozawa at the Vienna State Opera in 2002.

Albert Dohmen made his Bayreuth Festival début in 2007 as Wotan / the Wanderer and will perform this role also in 2009.
