Swiss born baritone Alejandro Marco-Buhrmester began his voice studies in 1984 at the Conservatory of Music and Theatre in Berne. One year later, and also in the following years, he won the Scholarship Voice from the MGB of the city of Zurich. In 1987, he switched to the opera studio of the Music-Academy in Basel and made his opera debut as Marcello (La Bohème) under the baton of Jun Märkl at the Stadttheater Biel.
Permanent engagements followed at the Aalto-Theater Essen (1989-92), where he sang all the important roles of the baritone repertoire, including Papageno (The Magic Flute), Guglielmo (Cosí fan tutte), Pelleas (Pelléas et Melisande), Prince Yeletzky (The Queen of Spades) at the side of Martha Mödl, Danilo Danilovic (The Merry Widow).  In 1992, he switched to the Opernhaus Dortmund, where he assumed the roles of Sharpless (Madama Butterfly), the Count (Le nozze di Figaro), Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia) and others. From 1995-1999 he was a member of the ensemble at the Komische Oper Berlin, where he continues to perform as a guest in such roles as Marcello (Bohème), Dr. Falke (Fledermaus) and Harlekin (Ariadne auf Naxos).
He performed as a guest at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken, Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, Oper Stadt Bonn, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Oper Frankfurt. Since the season 1999/2000 Alejandro Marco-Buhrmester is a freelance artist.
He also took part in the production of a CD and the subsequent concert performance of Kurt Weill's Der Protagonist at the Berlin Philharmonie with the Deutsches-Symphonie Orchester Berlin under the baton of John Mauceri.
In recent seasons, Alejandro Marco-Buhrmester has performed as a guest at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Schönberg's Moses and Aaron under the baton of Christian Thielemann and at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden as Kothner and Germont. He was a permanent guest at the Komische Oper Berlin and at the opera house in Bielefeld, where he was heard in the main part of Petrucchio in the musical Kiss Me Kate and as Lindorf, Coppelius, Dapertutto and Dr. Miracle in Les contes d'Hoffmann, and in some Italian operas such as Il Trovatore as Luna, Don Carlo as Posa and Lucia di Lammermoor as Enrico, which brought him much acclaim.
In 2001 Alejandro Marco-Buhrmester made his successful debut at the Bayreuther Festspiele as Konrad Nachtigall in Die Meistersinger. He was immediately reinvited for the year 2002, this time for the roles of Fritz Kothner (Meistersinger) and Reinmar von Zweter (Tannhäuser).
2004 finally brought his debut as Amfortas in Parsifal with Pierre Boulez/Christoph Schlingensief, a role he performed again in Bayreuth in 2005 and 2006 and in the same year in Frankfurt in a new production. Bayreuth has also invited him to be their Gunther in the new Ring under Christian Thielemann.
In Paris at the Bastille Opera he performed for the first time Kurwenal under the baton of Valerie Gergiev. As a guest he sang Germont at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin with conductors like Simone Young and Julia Jones.
Recent concert performances include Zemlinsky's Lyrische Sinfonie with the Staatskapelle Berlin under Fabio Luisi and Mahler's Eighth Symphony with the Bergen Philharmonic under Andrew Litton.
In season 11/12 the baritone was invited to do a new production by Willy Decker and Kirill Petrenko of Tristan und Isolde at the Ruhrtriennale (Kurwenal). He also made his debut as Orest / Elektra in Rome.
