Stephanie Houtzeel

American mezzo‐Soprano Stephanie Houtzeel was born in Kassel, Germany and grew up near Boston. Her appearances as Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier at the Vienna State Opera, the Opéra National de Paris, the Israeli Opera and the Graz Opera have been heralded as “vocally, dramatically and physically sublime” (Oopera News). She was nominated one of the best up‐and‐coming singers by "Opernwelt" Magazine for her performance of the Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos (under Philippe Jordan), and has gone on to sing this role in Zurich, Cologne, Tel Aviv, Antwerp and at the Vienna State Opera under Franz Welser-Möst and Jeffrey Tate. The Mozart roles of Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Sesto (La clemenza di Tito) and Idamante (Idomeneo) have also been central to her repertoire and have taken her to Vienna, Strasbourg, Washington, DC and Graz. In 2013 she will sing Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) for the first time in St.Gallen.

In 2011/12 Ms. Houtzeel celebrated critical and public successes at the Vienna State Opera as both Varvara in premiere of Katja Kabanova (under Franz Welser-Möst) and as Jenny Hill in Weill’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (Ingo Metzmacher). She also debuted at the Royal Danish Opera as Arsace in Semiramide. In 2013 she will make her debut at the Salzburg Festival as Meg Page in Falstaff under Zubin Mehta and at the Theater an der Wien in Schubert’s Lazarus (Martha).

The roles of Nicklausse (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Ottavia (L’incoronazione di Poppea), Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus), Marguerite (La Damnation de Faust) and Rosina (Il barbiere di Siviglia) have sent her to the Dresden Semperoper, the Vienna State Opera, the Opéra National de Lyon, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos Lisbon, the Vlaamse Opera and the Grazer Oper. In 2010 she made her New York City Opera debut as Rosmira in Handel’s Partenope.

Concert appearances include Mahlerʹs Third Symphony and Lieder aus Des Knaben Wunderhorn at the Vienna Musikverein and Avery Fisher Hall, appearances with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Bruckner Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Monnaie, the Norddeutsche Rundfunk Orchestra, Collegium Vocale Gent, the Combattimento Consort, Musicians from Marlboro, styriarte Graz, the Haydn and Bruckner Festivals and Great Performers of Lincoln Center.

Houtzeel’s discography includes Lully’s Armide on Naxos (the title role) and von Suppé’s Fatinitza on CPO (also the title role), the alto soIos in Mozart’s Requiem under Teodor Currentzis (on the Alpha label) and solo cantatas of Handel (Raumklang).
