Sorin Coliban

Sorin Coliban was born in Bucharest and studied and graduated as a singer and teacher from the renowned Bucharest Academy of Music in 1995, where he also attended masterclasses headed by Ileana Cotrubas.
Since the very beginning of his career he has been singing at such prestigious places like the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, Opera Bastille and Palais Garnier in Paris, Staatsoper and Volksoper in Vienna, War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco or the Staatsoper in Munich.
His career started in 1996 as Don Giovanni (Staging Ruggero Raimondi) at the Megaron Athens. In the following years he appeared at the ROH Covent Garden (La Bohème/Colline 1996, Rigoletto/Monterone 1997 and Romeo et Juliette/Capulet 2000), in Paris at the Opera Bastille (Carmen/Zuniga 1997, La Cenerentola/Alindoro 1998, La Bohème/Colline 1999) and the Théâtre du Châtelet, in San Francisco (Lucia di Lammermoor,Raimondo 1999), Santiago de Chile, Tel Aviv (La Cenerentola/Alindoro, 2001), Rossini Festival in Pesaro (Il Viaggio a Reims/Lord Sidney, 2001), Monte Carlo Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper München (2005), Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf (frz./Don Carlos/Grand Inquisiteur 2005), Stadttheater Klagenfurt (ital/Don Carlo/Filippo II 2001), Luzern (2002 und 2004: title part in Rossini’s Mosé, Fliegender Holländer/Holländer, Zauberflöte/Sarastro), Mozart Festival in La Coruna (Don Giovanni/Commendatore, 2005 as well as Zauberflöte/Sarastro, 2007).
Together with Angela Gheorghiu, Roberto Alagna and Ruggero Raimondi he participated in the Tosca-movie.
Sorin Coliban performed with conductors such as Bernard Haitink, James Conlon, Kent Nagano, Pinchas Steinberg, Richard Bonynge, Valery Gergiev and he sang with partners like Angela Gheorghiu, Maria Guleghina, Bryn Terfel, Jennifer Larmore, Ruggero Raimondi, Feruccio Furlanetto, Jose Van Dam, Ramon Vargas, Robert Lloyd, Roberto Alagna, Thomas Hampson and Anna Netrebko. He has worked with stage directors such as Jérôme Savary, Alfredo Arias, Robert Carsen, Graziela Sciutti, Jonathan Miller, Luc Bondy, Nicolas Joel and Benoit Jaquot.
Sorin Coliban has been a member of the ensemble of the Volksoper Wien and Staatsoper Wien since 2004 where he interpreted parts such as: Archelaos (Der König Kandaules), Komtur (Don Giovanni), Bonzo (Madame Butterfly), Müller (Irrelohe), Zuniga (Carmen), Bartolo (Die Hochzeit des Figaro), Friedrich Engel (Der Evangelimann), Konrad Nachtigall (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Timur (Turandot/NP), Eremit (Der Freischütz/NP), Bauer (Die Kluge/NP), Tommaso (Tiefland/NP), Basilio (Der Barbier von Sevilla/NP). At the Wiener Staatsoper he has been doing roles like Monterone (Rigoletto), Grand Inquisiteur (Don Carlos), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Capulet (Roméo et Juliette), Fra Melitone (La forza del destino), Fasolt (Das Rheingold), Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro).
In the summer of the year 2009 he had his debut at the Bregenz Festival in Austria, where he had a huge success as Ramfis in Verdi’s Aida and the Archbishop in Szymanowski’s King Roger.
