Nadine Weissmann

Born in Berlin, she completed her degrees in London and at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she studied with Virginia Zeani.  She began her first fest engagement at the theater in Osnabrück in 2002, where she developed her repertoire around central Fach roles and garnered particular success as Carmen. As a prizewinner of the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg, she sang Klytämnestra in Gluck’s Iphigenie in Aulis, further competition success includes the Second Prize and Wagner-Prize at the 2006 Francisco-Viñas Competition, as well as the Orchestra Prize in the 2008 Seattle Opera Wagner Competition.

Her first appearance as Herodias (Salome) at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar in 2006 was followed by a fest engagement until the end of the 2007/2008 season. Here, she gave her Wagner debuts in the Ring des Nibelungen as Erda (Rheingold), Schwertleite (Walküre), Erda (Siegfried), Waltraute and Second Norn (Götterdämmerung), and was also heard as Federica (Luisa Miller) and Carmen.  She remains a regular guest of the DNT and of the Staatskapelle Weimar.

Engagements have also brought the mezzo-soprano to the Glyndebourne and Edinburgh Festival, to Barcelona, Paris (Bastille), Madrid, Monte-Carlo, Valencia, Lisbon, Helsinki, Nancy, Bordeaux, Bilbao, St.Étienne, Mulhouse, Schwerin, Halle, Lübeck, and Frankfurt, to the Komische Oper Berlin, the Philharmonie Berlin, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and the Alte Oper Frankfurt, among others. 

Her large repertoire contains, along with the above mentioned parts, roles such as Baba the Turk (The Rake’s Progress), Leokadja Begbick (Mahagonny), Mrs.Quickly (Falstaff), Florence Pike (Albert Herring), Gräfin Helfenstein (Mathis der Maler), Brigitta (Die tote Stadt), Filipyevna (Eugene Onegin), Old Lady (Candide), Duenna (Betrothal in a Monastery), Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro), Mary (Der fliegende Holländer), Old Baroness (Vanessa), Marthe (Faust), Annina (Der Rosenkavalier), Anita (West Side Story), 6th Flowermaiden/Voice from above (Parsifal), and Maddalena (Rigoletto).

Concerts include orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmonic, DSO Berlin, Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, Frankfurt Museumsorchester, Weimarer Staatskapelle, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona, Radiofilharmonisch Orkest of the Netherlands, Staatskapelle Halle, and Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle for works like Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Missa solemnis, Mahler’s Second and Eigth Symphony, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody, Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder, Bernstein’s Jeremiah-Sympony, Ligeti’s Folk Songs, Berlioz’ Les nuits d’été, Verdi’s Requiem and Dvořák’s Stabat mater 

Her conductors include George Alexander Albrecht, Rasmus Baumann, Heribert Beissel, Felix Bender, Bertrand de Billy, Michael Boder, Rani Calderon, Daniele Callergari, Laurent Campellone, Jesús López-Cobos, Christoph Eschenbach, Asher Fisch, Lawrence Foster, James Gaffigan, Pablo Heras-Casado, Anthony Hermus, Martin Hoff, Daniel Huppert, Dmitri Jurowski, Lothar Koenigs, Zubin Mehta, Henrik Nánási, Joseph Olefirowicz, Imre Palló, Kirill Petrenko, Josep Pons, Valtteri Rauhalammi, Pietro Rizzo, Stefan Solyom, Robert Spano, Sebastian Weigle, and she has been directed by Andreas Baesler, Robert Carsen, Frank Castorf, Mariam Clément, La Fura dels Baus, Jean-Louis Grinda, Claus Guth, Holger Hauer, Philipp Himmelmann, Johannes Koegel-Dorfs, Barrie Kosky, Vincent Liotta, Marco Arturo Marelli, Thomas Münstermann, Olivier Py, and Michael Schulz.

In recent seasons she gave house and role debuts at the Komische Oper Berlin as Third Lady in Barrie Kosky’s Zauberflöte, in a new Carmen at the Bregenz Landestheater, as Flosshilde, Schwertleite and Second Norn in the Ring under Kirill Petrenko at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, at the Opéra de Marseille as Quickly in Falstaff, again as Schwertleite under Christian Thielemann at the Semperoper Dresden, the world premiere of an orchestral song cycle by and with George Alexander Albrecht and the Staatskapelle Weimar, as well as her first Laura in La Gioconda at the Musiktheater im Revier. Next season features role debuts in Rusalka and Medea at the Komische Oper Berlin, a return to the Bastille in Zauberflöte, concert performances and tours of Wagner operas with the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, as well as another summer season with the Bayreuth Festival.

Nadine Weissmann is featured as a guest artist on the Deutsche Grammophon’s  “Duets” CD by Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon, as well as in the entire Weimar Ring-Cycle on DVD and Blu-Ray by Arthaus.
