Iréne Theorin
Iréne Theorin was born in Broaryd in Sweden and studied at the Music Academy and Royal Opera School in Copenhagen. And it was in Copenhagen that she made her professional stage début as Donna
Anna in
Don Giovanni. Her wide-ranging repertory includes Brünnhilde in the
Ring, Isolde in
Tristan und Isolde, the title role in
Turandot, Elisabetta in
Don
Carlo, Amelia in
Un ballo in maschera, Leonora in
Il trovatore, Eva in
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Leonora in
La forza del destino, Sieglinde
in
Die Walküre and Senta in
Der fliegende Holländer. Following her début as Senta, one critic wrote that 'No voice can be more perfect for this role. She still has the dramatic
intensity and penetration as well as the most delicate piano. Her voice is brilliant and self-evidently beautiful with a particular radiance in its apparently limitless upward extension, in
addition to which she still has the youthful freshness that is so wonderfully suited to this role. She also offers an outstanding and dynamic account of this difficult character, with its mixture
of passion, childlike innocence and heroic resolve.' Among the houses where Iréne Theorin has appeared to date are the Royal Opera Houses in Stockholm, Copenhagen and London and the Nuremberg State
Theatre. Other engagements have taken her to the Maggio Musicale, Brussels, the Aalto Theatre in Essen, Cologne Opera, the Dresden State Opera, Rotterdam, the New National Theatre in Tokyo,
Beijing, Madrid and Tel Aviv.
Iréne Theorin made her Bayreuth début in 2000 as Ortlinde in
Die Walküre. Since 2008 she has been singing Isolde.
