The German soprano
Michaela Kaune was born in Hamburg and studied at the city's Academy of Music with Annie Schoonus and Judith Beckmann. A prizewinner in the Belvedere Competition in Vienna
and the Federal Singing Competition, she received the German Theatre Association's Otto Kasten Award in 1999. After early engagements in Bremen and Lübeck, she joined the Deutsche Oper in Berlin
for the 1997/8 season and since then has been heard in a lyric soprano repertory that includes Micaëla in
Carmen, Pamina in
Die Zauberflöte, Marguerite in Gounod's
Faust,
Donna Elvira in
Don Giovanni, the Countess in
Le nozze di Figaro, Anna in Marschner's
Hans Heiling, Euridice in
Orfeo ed Euridice and the title role in
Arabella. Guest appearances have taken her to Cologne Opera, the Aalto Theatre in Essen, the Dresden State Opera, the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Opéra National de Paris,
Frankfurt Opera, the Hamburg and Bavarian State Operas, the Wiesbaden State Theatre, the Opéra de Montpellier, the Nederlandse Opera and the Schleswig-Holstein, Salzburg and Ravinia Festivals.
Among the distinguished conductors with whom she has worked as Zubin Mehta, Simone Young and Kent Nagano.
Michaela Kaune made her Bayreuth Festival début in 2008 as Eva in
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. This role she will also perform in 2009.
