Daniele Gatti was born in Milan and studied the piano, violin, composition and conducting at the city’s Conservatory. He was twenty-seven when he first conducted at La Scala, where his most recent engagements have been Lohengrin in 2007 and Wozzeck in 2008. His La Scala début was soon followed by invitations to appear with the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Between 1992 and 1997 he was music director of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and from 1994 to 1997 he was principal guest conductor at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. In 1996 he became music director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, a post he continues to hold to this day. From 1997 to 2007 he was also music director of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna. In the course of his career Daniele Gatti has conducted many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, the London Symphony, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics, the Dresden Staatskapelle and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He made his Vienna State Opera début in 2002 conducting Simon Boccanegra and has returned for new productions of Otello, Boris Godunov and Moses und Aron in addition to various revivals. In 2007/8 he toured Europe with the Vienna Philharmonic, a tour that culminated in a performance of Verdi’s Requiem at the Vatican. As music director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he has appeared at the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and the annual BBC Proms. He has also made numerous recordings for BMG/RCA Red Seal, including works by Rossini, Mahler, Prokofiev, Bartók and Respighi.
In 2008 he conducts Stefan Herheim’s new production of Parsifal in Bayreuth, as well as 2009.
