Bernd Ernst Skodzig

Bernd Ernst Skodzig was born in Datteln and now works as a freelance stage and costume designer, dividing his time between London and Berlin. He gained his first practical experience of costume design by assisting Susanne Dieringer in Zurich. Between 1990 and 1995 he studied stage and costume design with Jürgen Rose at the National Academy of the Performing Arts in Stuttgart. On graduating he worked as Jürgen Rose's personal assistant, while also acting as consultant to the Textiles and Dress Department at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where his particular specialism was the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Among his curators at this time were Avril Hart and Susan North. Since 2000 he has worked as a freelance costume designer for Thomas Ostermeier and Sasha Waltz at the Berlin Schaubühne. In 2002 he designed the costumes for Burkhard Kosminski's production of Tankred Dorst's Merlin oder Das wüste Land, an assignment that was followed by further engagements at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus. Bernd Ernst Skodzig's first costume designs for an opera were for the world première of Hans Zender's Chief Joseph at the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden in 2005. The director on that occasion was Peter Mussbach. Bernd Ernst Skodzig has taught a course on 'Man and Fashion' at the Arts University of Bremen. He currently teaches stage costume at the Arts University in Berlin.

For the Bayreuth Festival he has designed the costumes for Tankred Dorst's production of the Ring.
